Exquisite wool blankets, and throws made by Swans Island in Maine, where raising sheep, spinning, dying and weaving are at the center of a community that creates everything by hand.
John and Carolyn Grace began making woolen blankets in the 1990s in their home on Swan Island, off the coast of Maine. They used wool from the local sheep woven on handlooms and time-honored techniques of production, including the creation of their own all-natural dyestuffs.
Swans Island produces a selection of handwoven organic Merino Wool Baby Blankets trimmed in silk that comes in an heirloom linen box which holds your own photo and makes a lovely family keepsake.
The company now operates from the mainland, but still employs local weavers and finishers from Maine and makes a range of products that includes pillows, throws and light weight summer fabrics. Tight quality control ensures the company still manufactures less than 2000 items a year.
Swans Island will produce custom orders for blankets, throws and pillows, including specific color combinations and monogramming.
