Who knew… marmoleum is made from linseed oil, not petroleum? I for one didn’t. There’s a lot more I didn’t know about it. The Forbo website is a treasure trove of information on the topic. The bottom line is that Forbo has a great product that is also environmentally responsible.
Made from natural raw materials, including linseed oil, pine rosins, and wood flour, marmoleum is biodegradable and environmentally friendly. The natural properties of marmoleum cause it to strengthen over its life. Marmoleum’s water-based Topshield finish considerably reduces the need for initial maintenance and chemicals, while providing lower cleaning costs and a better long-term appearance retention. When properly maintained, marmoleum will retain its attractive appearance for decades.
Marmoleum also helps create a healthier indoor environment. Naturally occurring anti-microbial properties inhibit the growth of many micro-organisms, including allergen producing dust mites and the MRSA strains of bacteria. Marmoleum has natural anti-static properties to repel dust and dirt, making it easier to maintain a clean and hygienic environment. From the indoor environment to the natural environment, Forbo Flooring Systems strives to create better environments.
Life-cycle analyses (LCAs) are applied throughout the world to quantify the potential environmental impacts of a product system over the lifecycle (i.e. from the extraction of the raw materials to the disposal of the product at the end of its useful life).
The results of an LCA of a number of floor coverings rank Marmoleum first as a nature-friendly floor covering, together with pure, unlacquered wood. In addition, Marmoleum earned an honorable mention for its long lifespan.
